MG BGT
The fixed-roof MGB GT, based on the MGB Roadster, was introduced in October 1965 and production continued until 1980. The Pininfarina designed body was, in theory, a 2+2 but the rear bench seat was of limited use for adults or older children. However, particularly with the rear seat folded down, there was significantly more luggage space than in the roadster, and this, added to the combination of saloon car levels of comfort with a sports car's performance and handling made the GT a very nice little two-seat touring car.
Although the coupe bodywork made the GT heavier than the roadster, its shape in some ways actually helped the car's performance via improved aerodynamics, giving a slightly higher top speed, and, many also felt, resulted in improved handling due to the stiffer chassis and a rearward shift in weight distribution, albeit at the expense of a small reduction in car's acceleration. The 1800cc engine and 4 speed + overdrive gearbox were the same as those in the roadster, and in fact relatively few mechanical components differed from those its sibling, although the GT did receive different suspension springs and anti-roll bars. As a result, the GT became very popular with those who wanted something more civilized than a roadster (and dare one say, more suited to the vagaries of the British climate!) whilst retaining the original model’s driver involvement.
Our 1978 model, finished Burgundy red and with its original interior, is a much loved member of the family. Owned over twenty three years ago by one of the proprietors of the Classic Car Hire Company, when "hissing Sid" was her daily driver, before practical considerations (and a company car) led her to pass it on to her uncle in 1991, who in turn cherished it for the better part of two decades before returning it to his niece to join the Classic Car Company fleet.
